Appreciating Veteran’s Day with Pinups for the Troops

I’m not big on wars or the military, but I respect the people putting their lives on the line. To show my appreciation, this Veteran’s Day, I compiled a list of modern-day organizations supporting the troops in the old fashioned pinup way!

Pin-ups for the Troops

The Pin-ups for the Troops project is intended to boost the moral of all soldiers stationed away from home. What’s special about this specific project is that they recreate original Gil Elvgren paintings. The photographs are compiled in a small paperback that easily fits into a soldier’s duffle bag, and is made of durable materials that can withstand the harsh conditions of the field. Proceeds from sales of the books are donated to Fisher House.

Election Day Pinups - Voting is Sexy!

It’s an exiting day for all of my American readers, so I’m devoting this election article to you. Take part in your country’s future, because voting IS sexy!

It’s time to put that note in the box and I have a great way to commend this democratic moment. It’s my collection of Election Day pinups. Some take sides, some just remind you of your civil duty and some make a mockery of the whole institution.

To start out, here’s something old and something new- a Gil Elvgren piece and a modern silhouette, courtesy of Cafepress enthusiasts. The Elvgren piece was the only classic election themed pinup I found, but don’t fret, because there’s so much more to come!

The Quirky and Sexy Art of Vintage and Retro Pinup Ads

It’s a little screwy, it’s a lot of sexy- it’s vintage and retro pinup ads!

Old ads always look quirky and ridiculous. Pop-culture moves so quickly something from 5 years ago doesn’t even make sense! I’m taking you back to some distinct visual times, to take a look at the quirky and sexy art of vintage and retro ads.

George Petty - The Master of What The Fuck?!

I don’t know who was the perv, who decided to pair up George Petty with Ridgid (a heavy-duty tools and plumbing utility manufacturer). I also don’t know why this series of pinup girls have ballet slippers on. But goddamnit! This is one of those classics. Petty made a ridiculous, sexist, stereotypical connection between women and heavy duty machinery, and that always makes for a delightful lighthearted pinup.

Men Pinup Artists Vs. Women Pinup Artists

Do men pinup artists draw differently than women pinup artists? It’s the battle of the sexes!

It had to be asked- you know it and I know it. It’s so basic to the art-form, it just couldn’t be ignored. Pinup art is about the way an artist perceives sex and women, so there are bound to be differences. Let’s observe, together, the differences and similarities between men and women pinup artists.

A Little History

Traditionally, not many women artists are historically documented. Women rights are such a new concept, that sometimes I wonder how we got so far, in such a short time span. Historically, it was World War II that launched women into the work-place, in America, and they had their hand in every field of expertise and occupation.

10 Reasons Why We Love Pinups

How do I love pinups and let me count the ways...

Yes, I sat myself down and asked myself why it is I blog about pinups. It’s so trivial, it’s so silly and so horny! So why then? Here are 10 fine reasons!

#10 The Detail

I’m a sucker for good craftsmanship. Most people are. As an art student you learn to appreciate abstract art and god knows I love it, but there is always a special place in my heart for that artist that can really draw convincing fingernails and get deep into the garter-clasp details.

Pinups Through the Looking Glass

Some pinup artists are skilled, sophisticated and patient enough to add a little technical challenge to their work - the mirror.

While looking for pinup twins a month ago, I found myself eyeing another pinup art practice - the mirrored pinup. I haven't managed to find an essay about the appearance of mirrors and reflections in a painting (let me know if you got the inside story via comment or email Happy ), but I gather it’s an interesting research subject. In pinup art a lot of the profound meaning is shallowed out to eye-candy. I’m hoping to find some insight into the mirrored pinup.

Showing Off All Assets

As I said, in most pinup art, the profound possibilities of meaning are usually shallowed down to simple efficiency. In most cases, the pinup will be either facing the viewer, or with her back to the viewer and the mirror is there to show all the pinup’s assets - front to back.

#24 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: The Pin Up Art of Ralph Burch

Ralph Burch is a fabulous contemporary pinup artist. Seems to be influenced mainly by Enoch Bolles and Gil Elvgren. On the other hand, he’s definitly got the slickness of today’s digital touch. Beautiful art with a giggle and a smile. The Best Kind Laugh

Top 10 Pinup Games - Sporty Glamor Girls

It’s not rare to see an active cheesecake, all dolled up and ready to have fun. You’d be quite surprised at how many active glamor girls are out there.

I was getting ready for a hunt, when I realized sporty pinups are all over the place. From the earliest 30’s to today, sisters are gearing up, taking hits and making hits. Whatever these glamor girls play at, sometimes they’re totally awkward and sometimes they exude confidence in spades. Here are the top 10 pinup games.

#10 Boxing

Ok, so there’s only one classic pinup in this world that depicts a boxer. She’s an Elvgren girl and he named her simply “A Knockout”.

There is, however, one more hot pinup that boxes and really knows how to hand out a punch. The daughter of legend Muhammad Ali, Laila Ali- definitly pinup worthy.

10 Strangest Pinup Artist Quirks

Visual artists can’t hide behind their work, at some point, some one will notice, a fetish, a habit a quirk. Missing belly buttons, fake breasts, detached heads- This is a list of the 10 most fucked up pinups in classic cheesecake history.

No disrespect to these wonderful artists- as an artist myself- I know how much it sucks to be told “you missed a spot”. These details, however, are part of pinup history, and quite an idiosyncratic part, at that. I hope you enjoy this quirky look at fine pinup art.

#10 Alberto Vargas’ Pointed Nails

Alberto Vargas’ work is practically flawless. It’
