Some pinup artists are skilled,
sophisticated and patient enough to add a
little technical challenge to their work -
the mirror.
While looking for
pinup twins a month ago, I found myself
eyeing another pinup art practice - the
mirrored pinup. I haven't managed to find an
essay about the appearance of mirrors and
reflections in a painting (let me know if you
got the inside story via comment or
email ), but I gather it’s an
interesting research subject. In pinup
art a lot of the profound meaning is
shallowed out to eye-candy. I’m hoping
to find some insight into the mirrored
pinup.
Showing Off All AssetsAs I said, in
most pinup art, the profound possibilities of
meaning are usually shallowed down to simple
efficiency. In most cases, the pinup will be
either facing the viewer, or with her back to
the viewer and the mirror is there to show
all the pinup’s assets - front to back.

Ralph Burch is a
fabulous contemporary pinup artist. Seems
to be influenced mainly by Enoch
Bolles and Gil
Elvgren. On the other hand, he’s
definitly got the slickness of today’s
digital touch. Beautiful art with a giggle
and a smile. The Best Kind

Is the contemporary pinup
pornography?
Last week, I posted a whimsical little
anthology about pinups in
sports. I had a few
interesting remarks, on and off-site,
inquiring as to “Where are the real women?” I
didn’t completely understand the nature of
the question, but a thought came to my head:
Unlike Playboy, some readers read this blog
for the pictures. Am I a Porn Blog? Some, I
suppose, think so.
All
this train of thought brings us to today’s
issue:
Is the contemporary pinup pornography?

For this Pinup, Polar Bears aren't Just a
Prop!
 While thinking up a
pinup for Earth Day, I came across
Enoch
Bolles' horrific (yet mesmerizingly
painted) pinup in red lingerie.
Traumatized for life, an idea popped into
my head for another
environmental pinup.
As many of you know, one of my favorite
pinups involves such senseless brutality,
Elvgren's The Bear Facts (under the Enoch
Bolles pinup). This
is my take on The Bear Facts, and the
role of Polar Bears in pinup art, in the
21st century.

Corsets, sheer robes, silk, cotton,
flowers and polka dots and everything nice!
That’s what pinup unmentionables are made of.
For your pleasure and education, here’s a
peep at pinup lingerie- then and now.
There was an age, when you could catch a
pinup in regular, every day panties. White
cotton shorts that would peep out from a
scandalously flowing skirt. With the rise of
girlie magazines, came a demand for more
risque cheesecake. Artists, happily obliged
and today there is a huge collection of
drawings of the day’s finest lingerie and
fantasy wear.
