Ever since 1969, the British tabloid, The
Sun, has been running glamour shots on page
3. On November the 17th 1970, the
magazine celebrated it’s first anniversary
with it’s first nude Page 3 Girl. Page 3
Girls never wore a top since. But even
without the tops, you can see a difference in
the times.

Girl
Stephanie Rahn was
the girl to celebrate the suns first
anniversary and the first Page 3 Girl to
go nude. You can still smell the summer
of ’69 on this image. Fair haired,
natural and in nature; it’s hard to
believe this image brought up as much
controversy, as it did! To many of the
British, today, this image is an
irrefutable piece of British pop-culture
(much like the famous
Farrah in the red bathing suit is for
Americans.)
Retro Page 3 Girls
It seems the trend
of 1950’s pinup girls isn’t a new
millennium invention. In the mid
seventies, the girls next door, with
flowers in their hair were quite
popular.
Other themes were also popular:
A Step Forward
The early 1980’s
showed a baby step towards diversity with the
black Gillian de Terville.
Another Gillian would be strikingly ahead of
her times, in terms of her looks: Gillian
Duxbury had the pouty lips, the peroxided
hair, the big breasts, the meticulously
shaved pubic hair: Welcome to the late 90’s
folks… They were happening in the 80’s!
There’s no Escape from the 80’s
It
seems to me that just about everyone had a
bad 80’s. Even the Page 3 Girls. The big
hair, the strange accessories. A picture is
worth a thousand words:

Girls were all about enormously
disproportionate breasts. You can argue it’s
aesthetics, I’m for all things natural,
personally.
Plastic Blonde Dolls Get Fit
The new
millennium would surprisingly bring breasts
down a notch. Although pinups would never be
the same again- the images glossier, blonder
and more perfected than ever- it seems that
there is a “au natural” trend going on. The
Page 3 Girls are looking skinny, but fit,
reminiscent of the early 70’s girls. And that
little bit of diversity is showing, but not
enough!
