Over two years of The Pinup Blog and,
surprisingly enough, we’ve yet to touch on a
very pinup-esque theme: The zodiac.
Women as allegory
came up in last
week’s post. Today is all allegory
with Zodiac Pinups. Though traditionally
woman have been used in the images of the
Virgo sign and often Aquarius, this week,
we’ll be focusing on complete series of
women as zodiac signs.
#10 Fantasy Zodiac Pinups
Probably what you’d
most expect to see out of a woman zodiac
series, but surprisingly not the most
commonly found on the net. Soft and
meticulous fantasy art, with kitschy
mystical touches. It’s less overtly sexy
and focuses more on femininity.
Something for the whole family
Women have often shown up in
revolutionary images. What is a woman’s role
in the revolution? Today The Pinup Blog
explores revolutionary pinups!
Visual art has always had the ability to
concretely represent abstract concepts, while
still leaving room for debate. Revolution is
one of those abstract concepts.
Interestingly, women have been one theme
utilized in order to interpret the many faces
of the concept of revolution. Today, we take
a look at the different female
representations of revolutions.
In search for pinup
beauty, I landed on
this terrific show-don’t-tell post at
LiveJournal. The post showcases some of the
most common trends in contemporary pinup art;
fantasy, neo-realism, photoshopped beauty and
interesting trending towards classic
expressionism. Take some time off for this
safe for work compilation.

What’s the fierce attraction to Hamish
Blakely’s stunning piece, Duel?
Last Thursday, we were introduced to the
brilliant work of Hamish Blakely. Though
Blakely creates many beautiful and complex
images and I recommend checking them all out,
the image we’re about to discuss, Duel, was
the most striking, to me, and I couldn’t wait
to examine it more deeply. So without further
ado!
Hamish
Blakely is the brilliant artist who
created this and many other meticulous and
dramatic paintings. I find these paintings
are the graphic
definition of “erotic”, with lighting,
composition and all possible effects that
create an unforgettable scene. Of course
Blakely’s subjects add more diversity to
the pinup hall of fame, which makes me
love his work even more. Pinups of
substance; Check them all out!

In dramatic scene, tough and even evil,
it’s the sexy Easter bunny fantasy gone
awry.
One of the most
common fantasies in cyber space, the
sexy bunny, has endless Google results.
While the typical sexy Easter bunny is
just a poster girl, on the sweet side
and often a Playboy cliche, I’ve run
into a more fetishistic bunny, this
year, which I’m more than glad to share
with you.
The “exotic” fantasy has always existed
in the pinup realm and long before. The Pinup
Blog takes a look at the social aspects of
one of its favorite fantasies.
I love the diversity that’s offered in the
pinup world. Beautiful images are produced
with the assistance of cultural symbols in
clothing and accessories and, of course, the
diversity of the models themselves. I touched
on this subject in
my article about Palestinian pinups.
Rather than repeat what could have made a
great opening for this article, I’d like to
start with this whimsical, clever and
beautiful young woman, Natalie, who’s totally
an “exotic” pinup girl of her times.
I just happened to
stumble on
a blog post focusing on French print artist,
Édouard Chimot. Chimot is mainly known
for his work during the 1920’s, such as this
one. Much of his work depicts the glamorous
and depraved city life. You can tell that the
fashions are just transitioning from
victorian to 20th century.
Fascinating pinups with economic lines. Look
him up!

The breasts are lopsided and frightening,
the nipples are turned at strange angles, the
hips and bum are exaggerated, and the cute
button up nose is pushed upwards and
distorted. Lisa Yuskavage gleefully mocks the
male fantasy.
Traditional pin-up
artwork may rest somewhere between the
border of illustration and pornography,
but many modern artist are trying to
help push the genre towards a more fine
art end. Pin-ups by definition are
created for mass consumption, able to be
posted up and viewed by a large
audience. The most classic images are
those of beautiful young women posed
suggestively to draw the consumer into
buying an array of products and
services.

The Pinup Blog is ecstatic to create a
tribute to the Gibson Girl. And it’s about
time, too!
By the end of the
19th
century, Charles Dana Gibson conjured up
the “Gibson Girl”. The Gibson Girl, in a
sense, was a byproduct of Gibson’s
satire work, but her beauty overpowered
the American audience and she soon
became the first national standard for
feminine beauty, in America. Her
distinct style made her iconic, and her
signature big hair and hourglass figure
are easily recognizable.
The Collar: Innocent fashion accessory,
or bondage gear?
From the most
innocent piece of jewelry to the most
fetishist admission of submission, collars
are actually quite common in pinup art. Today
we’ll look at a few examples of collars in
cheesecake and try too see if their function
and concept changes.
The Innocent Accessory in Classic
Pinups
Most probably
originating from Victorian fashions, the
collar, better known as the choker
(political correctness gone awry?), has
been fashionable all through the
19th
century. Many classic pinups from the
1940’s and 50’s feature this elegant,
little accessory:
The new year is upon us and so are the
calender girls!

traditional display method for pinups. What’s

Is an icon different than an object? Does
a contemporary female pinup artist create
differently than a classic female pinup
artist?
Last time I’ve
analyzed a specific pinup piece it was
Zoë Mozert’s Bubbles. I was looking to
see what a female pinup artist does
differently than male pinup artists. In
Mozert’s case, we came to the banal gender
outlook, in which women portray women in a
soft manner, and yet still, as typical of the
genre, the woman in the image was
objectified. Today we look at radically
different Olivia de Berardinis and her piece
Belle Du Jour (1987).
Line, Blot, Shape, Texture and
Pattern
Once again, we start at the
basics. And again we talk about the fact that
the lines in pinup art are usually
suggestive- the meeting of two color
surfaces, creates the illusion of a line.
This, of course, creates the realism, so
typical of the genre. There are, however, the
white lines in the background, which seem to
serve as a pattern. These lines have a
compositional importance that we’ll get back
to later on, but also seem to serve as a
design element, hinting of Art Nouveau, which
is quite typical in de Berardinis’ work. The
straight, vertical lines conjure up guitar
strings, and- in conjuncture- the wavy lines
may remind us of music, loosely conversing
with abstract greats such as Paul Klee and
Wassily Kandinsky.
Blots are also rendered softly, in order to
create the illusion of reality. But unlike
Zoë Mozert’s piece, de Berardinis’ work has
sharp edges that rarely blend into one
another. Something we’ll get back to in the
lighting section.
Anita commissioned my work for a cause that’s
dear and near to my heart; Breast cancer
awareness. I was ecstatic to create the
Pink
Ribbon Pinup for Anita’s Intimate
Boutique (link coming soon), a plus size
boutique that specializes in mastectomy.
Beyond breast cancer awareness, nothing
gives me more pleasure than to promote
diversity, again, with this big, beautiful
African American woman.

Molly
Kiely,

is an in-your-face underground comics
artist and illustrator. I find her and her
work (in no particular order) fascinating,
cheeky and devilishly sexy. She’s got a

Everyone ought to have a colourful past

mine is being an unrepentant pornographer.
I've heard all the criticism about
pornography that there is -- so boring. My
sexually explicit work is not declasse or
moronic, and I maintain that I am a kickass

"undermines the paradigm of Lonely Guys
Comic Porn."

This meticulously

the phenomenal Brian M.

Sexy female
pin ups have been part of the Sci-Fi
fantasy genre since it’s creation.
Monthly magazine in the 30’s 40’s and
50’s feathered sexy half dressed woman
on their covers, usually fighting some
sort of horrible monster.
For most of the 20thcentury, the
sci-fi fantasy genre was male dominated, and
female roles were usually confined to the
generic female roles- the sexy babe or the
damsel in distress. While Tolkien and Asimov
had some more feminist female roles-
likeEowynand Dr.Susan
Calvin, those
characters where few and far in between.
Most female characters where for show, the
love interest of the brave male hero, the
sexy temptress etc.
The marvelous
fantasy artist, Jessica
Oyhenart (a.k.a
“tattereddreams&rdquo, has created these two
brilliant fairy tale pinups. Though she
only directly mentions “Masquerade Ball
- Alice” (left) as inspired by Alice in
Wonderland, I thought “Autumn” (right)
alludes to Little Red Riding Hood. Could
make for a wonderful neo pinup series...

Does a female pinup artist bring
something new to the world of
pinups?
I’ve already
analyzed two pinup works of the most
outstanding pinup artists [1,2],
now it’s time to explore one of the
most outstanding female pinup artist,
Zoë Mozert. Mozert’s 1948 piece,
“Bubbles”, shows off the artist’s
undeniable craftswomanship, but does
it take a different approach to pinup
art?
Line, Blot, Shape, Texture and
Pattern
Without a doubt this is one
of the softest pinups you’ll ever
encounter. Starting with the basics, as
always, we take a look at the most
elementary components of the image. Aside
from the plaid pattern on the hair-bow
(which I’ll get back to later), there’s
no real use of lines in Mozert’s
painting. As we learned from other pinups
I’ve analyzed, it is typical, in pinup
art, to try and mimic reality. For this
reason, suggestive lines are employed- or
rather, the meeting of two color
surfaces, creates the illusion of a line.
Thus, in essence, what you get is a use
of color blots that create shapes. Also-
typical of pinup art- the blots are
smoothed out, in order to create a “soft
surface” and soft shapes, so much so,
that at times the shapes fuse into each
other:
I don’t know
what language this is (feel free to
fill me in), but whether German or
Dutch, Pin-Up
Art Favoritter has collected some
fine classic pinup Americana, by the
great masters (Armstrong, Petty,
Vargas, Bolles, Bryers and, of course,
Elvgren), that I just haven’t seen
before. Like this “Shapely Woman Going
Fishing” by George Petty, for example.
A respectable collection, with rare
finds. Enjoy!

While the wholesome folks at Disney
keep our children at a safe distance from
luscious cleavages and male nipples, you
guys go back home and elaborate on the
fantasy. This week on The Pinup Blog:
Brilliant, sensual, Disney pinups!
The up and coming
Princess and the Frog, reminded me of
all the times I saw an elaboration on a
Disney character. Disney’s men and women
become icons and are instantly
recognizable, thus making for fantastic,
sexy pastiche. But before we delve into
the world of R-rated Disney mock-ups,
let’s take a look at Disney’s own
subliminal sex appeal, to the left. It’s
amazing what context can do.
You gotta love a Disney pinup. Always
proper, tits never too big for her
waist line, big innocent eyes,
virginal. Even with those restrictions,
Disney always manages to get away with
a hefty cleavage, but this year, they
took it up a notch with The Princess
and the Frog. Stepping it up with the
sexual innuendoes, and my favorite bit-
diversity. The story is based in New
Orleans of the 1920’s, which makes for
a rather shameful historical
inaccuracy. On the other hand, Disney
has a bit of a shortage of ethnic
heros, so the randomness of the
princess’ ethnicity (unlike Princess
Jasmine or Mulan) is very refreshing.

It’s actually more rare than you
think. The teacher fetish is a classic
fantasy, but when you look for classic
images, you might be surprised.
The teacher
fetish is one of those natural
occurrences. Young boys, in their
teens, won’t be able to ignore the
refreshing sight of a good looking
educator. If a boy was lucky
enough to actually have an
attractive teacher, odds are he’ll
remember her fondly, for years to
come. Thus the teacher fetish is
born. I made every effort to avoid
porn and keep it classy. It’s a
challenge, but someone’s got to do
it.
We’ll start off with a vintage
soundtrack, to get you in the mood:
Frankie Avalon’s Teacher’s Pet:
“Since the dawn of time, the
promise of our charms has been used to
urge our men into battle. We are called
up to rally behind our troops, and to
give the boys something to take their
minds off their job: WAR. Those times
are over.”
These lovely
words are those of Pinups for
Peace. A grassroots organization
promoting peace with a sexy, retro
edge. You don’t need much to be
pinup for peace, just show up at
your nearest love-fest,
demonstration, or strike, wearing
your nylons and garters and hold up
the sign:
“Burlesque not Bombs!”
The group’s site shows that there
hasn’t been much activity since 2008.
As my readers know, this cause is dear

with a touch of man-made glamour
and viola! A glamor
flower girl!
