Revolutionary Pinups

Women have often shown up in revolutionary images. What is a woman’s role in the revolution? Today The Pinup Blog explores revolutionary pinups!

Eugene_Delacroix_-_La_liberte_guidant_le_peuple

Visual art has always had the ability to concretely represent abstract concepts, while still leaving room for debate. Revolution is one of those abstract concepts. Interestingly, women have been one theme utilized in order to interpret the many faces of the concept of revolution. Today, we take a look at the different female representations of revolutions.

#213 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Women in Modern Art

In search for pinup beauty, I landed on this terrific show-don’t-tell post at LiveJournal. The post showcases some of the most common trends in contemporary pinup art; fantasy, neo-realism, photoshopped beauty and interesting trending towards classic expressionism. Take some time off for this safe for work compilation.

#212 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Racialicious: Who’s a Pretty Burlesque Princess Now

The inspiring burlesque artist, Tiara the Merch Girl, is also a prolific writer on issues of race in the world of burlesque, at Racialicious ( “a [fantastic] blog about the intersection of race and pop culture” ). I was ecstatic to find The Pinup Blog mentioned in her article, Who’s a Pretty Burlesque Princess Now. The article asks significant questions about the diversity of burlesque and its importance as an art-form and innovator. Take a few minutes off for some burlesqu-shop-talk, to read this phenomenal post.

Rivalry or Attraction - The Tension in Hamish Blakely’s Duel

What’s the fierce attraction to Hamish Blakely’s stunning piece, Duel?

Last Thursday, we were introduced to the brilliant work of Hamish Blakely. Though Blakely creates many beautiful and complex images and I recommend checking them all out, the image we’re about to discuss, Duel, was the most striking, to me, and I couldn’t wait to examine it more deeply. So without further ado!

#209 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Hamish Blakely's Erotic Dancer

Hamish Blakely is the brilliant artist who created this and many other meticulous and dramatic paintings. I find these paintings are the graphic definition of “erotic”, with lighting, composition and all possible effects that create an unforgettable scene. Of course Blakely’s subjects add more diversity to the pinup hall of fame, which makes me love his work even more. Pinups of substance; Check them all out!

#208 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere by Ryan McGinley

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is Ryan McGinley’s latest collection of portraits. While sex is definitely an issue that’s evident in McGinley’s work, there are many human issues that it evokes. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is a beautiful collection that shows the diversity of young people, rarely shown in the mainstream channels.

“Fool” is surprisingly a very common word in love songs. This year, the first of April takes a serious turn with 10 gorgeous and diverse pinups that sing about fools.

#10 Aretha Franklin - Runnin’ Out of Fools

We start with the 1964 classic, Runnin’ Out of Fools, with a young and sweet, but very mature Aretha Franklin. It’s always fascinating to see the alternative images sold at the time to the public and better yet, through an incredible performance, like this one.

#206 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Politics and Pinups at Susie Bright's

A friend sent me Susie Bright’s fascinating sexual politics blog. I admit, I had to go through the gorgeously sexy pictures (like this ridiculously pulp cover for Orwell’s 1984) before I surfed it for the articles. A fine addition to my sidebar collection. A good read with loads of eye candy for the vintage lovers.

Who You Calling “Exotic”?! - On Pinups, Orientalism and Sex

The “exotic” fantasy has always existed in the pinup realm and long before. The Pinup Blog takes a look at the social aspects of one of its favorite fantasies.

I love the diversity that’s offered in the pinup world. Beautiful images are produced with the assistance of cultural symbols in clothing and accessories and, of course, the diversity of the models themselves. I touched on this subject in my article about Palestinian pinups. Rather than repeat what could have made a great opening for this article, I’d like to start with this whimsical, clever and beautiful young woman, Natalie, who’s totally an “exotic” pinup girl of her times.

Lisa Yuskavage - Cheesecake that’s Hard to Swallow

by Krysten Allen

The breasts are lopsided and frightening, the nipples are turned at strange angles, the hips and bum are exaggerated, and the cute button up nose is pushed upwards and distorted. Lisa Yuskavage gleefully mocks the male fantasy.

Traditional pin-up artwork may rest somewhere between the border of illustration and pornography, but many modern artist are trying to help push the genre towards a more fine art end. Pin-ups by definition are created for mass consumption, able to be posted up and viewed by a large audience. The most classic images are those of beautiful young women posed suggestively to draw the consumer into buying an array of products and services.

The Gibson Girl

The Pinup Blog is ecstatic to create a tribute to the Gibson Girl. And it’s about time, too!

By the end of the 19th century, Charles Dana Gibson conjured up the “Gibson Girl”. The Gibson Girl, in a sense, was a byproduct of Gibson’s satire work, but her beauty overpowered the American audience and she soon became the first national standard for feminine beauty, in America. Her distinct style made her iconic, and her signature big hair and hourglass figure are easily recognizable.

Creating a Pinup Icon - Olivia de Berardinis’ Belle Du Jour

Is an icon different than an object? Does a contemporary female pinup artist create differently than a classic female pinup artist?

Last time I’ve analyzed a specific pinup piece it was Zoë Mozert’s Bubbles. I was looking to see what a female pinup artist does differently than male pinup artists. In Mozert’s case, we came to the banal gender outlook, in which women portray women in a soft manner, and yet still, as typical of the genre, the woman in the image was objectified. Today we look at radically different Olivia de Berardinis and her piece Belle Du Jour (1987).

Line, Blot, Shape, Texture and Pattern

Once again, we start at the basics. And again we talk about the fact that the lines in pinup art are usually suggestive- the meeting of two color surfaces, creates the illusion of a line. This, of course, creates the realism, so typical of the genre. There are, however, the white lines in the background, which seem to serve as a pattern. These lines have a compositional importance that we’ll get back to later on, but also seem to serve as a design element, hinting of Art Nouveau, which is quite typical in de Berardinis’ work. The straight, vertical lines conjure up guitar strings, and- in conjuncture- the wavy lines may remind us of music, loosely conversing with abstract greats such as Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.

Blots are also rendered softly, in order to create the illusion of reality. But unlike Zoë Mozert’s piece, de Berardinis’ work has sharp edges that rarely blend into one another. Something we’ll get back to in the lighting section.

Making an Entrance - Unforgettable Pinup Film Appearances

<< Last #173 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: The Pinup Art of Molly Kiely
  • #174 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Vintage Pinup Decals Next >>

First impressions matter, and as film makers know, one way the ultimate way to make a woman attractive, is to give her a dramatic, well produced entrance.

When a sexy woman enters the room, for the first time in a film, she can’t just come in. Sensuous close ups and leering long shots must be exercised to their fullest, preferably with a singing number and over the top sexual innuendo. Today we take a look at gorgeous women first appearing on the screen and the men that gawk at them.

Uma Thurman as Venus - Renaissance Pinup

It seems appropriate to start with the mother of all desirable women, Venus. In The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, a fresh faced Uma Thurman makes for one of the most ethereal and soft entrances in cinema. Heavily based on Botticelli’s version of venus, the painting comes alive with sound and motion, leaving the audience and the men struck by a pure, but not un-sensual beauty of a time long ago.

#173 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: The Pinup Art of Molly Kiely

Molly Kiely, author of Diary of a Dominatrix, is an in-your-face underground comics artist and illustrator. I find her and her work (in no particular order) fascinating, cheeky and devilishly sexy. She’s got a lot to say, so here’s some of it:

Everyone ought to have a colourful past (and, ideally, a colourful present), and mine is being an unrepentant pornographer. I've heard all the criticism about pornography that there is -- so boring. My sexually explicit work is not declasse or moronic, and I maintain that I am a kickass feminist. In the words of one of my admirers, my work is "seditious" and "undermines the paradigm of Lonely Guys Comic Porn."

And on that note, check her out!

Sci-Fi Pniups - Part 1 (1920’s-1970’s)

by Yifat Shaik

Sexy female pin ups have been part of the Sci-Fi fantasy genre since it’s creation. Monthly magazine in the 30’s 40’s and 50’s feathered sexy half dressed woman on their covers, usually fighting some sort of horrible monster.

For most of the 20
th century, the sci-fi fantasy genre was male dominated, and female roles were usually confined to the generic female roles- the sexy babe or the damsel in distress. While Tolkien and Asimov had some more feminist female roles- like Eowyn and Dr. Susan Calvin, those characters where few and far in between. Most female characters where for show, the love interest of the brave male hero, the sexy temptress etc.

Halloween Special - Horrifically Sexy Pinups

Halloween is coming up and it’s time to get horrifically sexy with a look at the pinups of horror television (and one movie). And ask a few questions about what it all means?

Lust and fear come together in the horror entertainment industry. Basically, where there’s a scary monster, you’ll find a beautiful lady, making for a good star-crossed lovers tale. Many times, however, you’ll find the lady is actually the monster, claiming archaic ideas that a woman’s lust is a dark desire that will consume you. All this and so much more allegories, in The Pinup Blog’s Halloween special.

Burlesque Pour L'art

Making art in pasties is no joking matter, but it is a lot of laughs.

Burlesque was always more about tease than strip. I looked far and wide and found that many burlesque artists take it a notch higher, with more than raunch in mind. I also found some fantastic pieces in “family” variety shows that aren’t considered burlesque per se, but would have a huge audience in the burlesque crowd. It’s artsy, it’s fun, it’s full of thought, it’s sexy, it’s burlesque!

Pinup Evolution - From the Calender Girl to the Neo Pinup

What does Elvgren’s girl next door have to do with Masuimi Max’s tattoos? It’s all a web of pinupology. Watch the evolution as it happens!

The pinup girl evolution isn't, a linear one. Like most genres of art, each school would interpret it differently, geography would change the aesthetics, and post modernism- and much more recently- the pluralism of the internet would implode any possibility of linearism. Palestinian Pinups - Not Your Exotic, Not Your Erotic

Palestinian women come in all shapes, colors and sizes, with different beliefs, different religions and different ways of life. This isn’t a well known fact, yet. In this article I’d like to look at the beauty from within as well as from without.

I can’t ignore the fact that I’m Israeli and pro-Palestinian and the reactions this article may bring my way (or just this sentence). Nevertheless, it’s important to me to create a bridge, where walls are being biult- around Palestinians and Arabs and Muslims in general. Most important to me, is to show off, to people of the West, the beauty and individuality of each woman I feature. You can’t group Palestinians into crude stereotypes, as you can’t group any other group of people. If you do it, you miss out on the beautiful diversity of the world.

Father’s Day Special - The Lolita Fetish

Father’s day is coming up and in that context, it’s a great time to talk about that ever-so-taboo fetish: Lolita.

Nabokov wasn’t really talking about pedophilia, but the shock value seems to overshadow the existential value of the novel, Lolita. The cultural significance is found between the pages of the dictionary:

“Main Entry: Lo·li·ta
Pronunciation: \lō-ˈlē-tə\
Function: noun
Etymology: from Lolita, character in the novel Lolita (1955) by Vladimir Nabokov
Date: 1959
: a precociously seductive girl”

And also found on celluloid (as seen above). Most people find it disconcerting that grown men may feel attracted to young ladies. Or that grown women act like little girls, in order to attract grown men. As a result, culture has given rise to some interesting phenomena.

Mature Pinups - Embellishing on 6 Of The World's Most Beautiful Older Women

I usually make my own magic lists, but I stumbled upon The Huffington Post’s Lesley M. M. Blume’s “6 Of The World's Most Beautiful Older Women” and just couldn’t agree more.

I don’t know if I’m getting older, or older women are getting more beautiful, but without a doubt, today, there are numerous beautiful women who respect their aging nature. Lesley M. M. Blume, who wrote this list, said it beautifully:

“...these ladies know better than to try to look like you're 20 when you're 50. The real trick: to look like a beautiful 50-year-old when you're 50.”

I loved Blume’s list and thought it was right on. So in the name of non-plastic aging and the appreciation of the diversity of all that’s beautiful in this world, here’s the embellished list of 6 Of The World's Most Beautiful Older Women:

#1 Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren, 64, always had guts, when it came to choosing her roles, but also taking off her clothes. From the sweet and innocent young lass in The Age of Consent to to the sultry and depressed wife of a sadistic tyrant in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover to the tough and introverted detective on Prime Suspect, Mirren always carries herself with a very attractive dignity. And of course she’s the perfect woman to open this list, as part of the cast of Calendar Girls:

#119 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Kolomon Moore - A Vintage Time Capsule

An interesting vintage find is this site dedicated to little-known artist Kolomon Moore. Moore lived in the 1930’s and drew much of the decadent city life. From the glamor piece, to the left, to shoddy brothel scenes. Not all pieces are as well executed (or as safe for work) as this one, but it’s definitely an fascinating time capsule.

Mexican Pinups - A Cinco De Mayo Special- The Pinup Blog Way

Repulsed by portrayal of women as used in Cinco de Mayo ecards, The Pinup Blog went on a hunt for Sexy Mexican culture with self respect.

It’s a little hard to balance my feminism with my love of pinups, but sometimes I’ve got to say “no”. Usually when a holiday pops up, I just Google “sexy Christmas/Halloween” to start my search. The results for “sexy Cinco De Mayo” kind of grossed me out. But there’s a thin red line, between that and the booty shaking, “booz me up” image, next to it. So I decided to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by celebrating some beautiful, respectful Mexican pinups.

#116 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Belly Dancing - The Original Burslesque

In a time of great divide, I think it’s a great opportunity to create bonds rather than gaps. As an Israeli, having a Tunisian Muslim friend, has made me that much more appreciative of our similarities. My friend sent me the video to the left, because she wanted to share with me something she loves. Once watching this little collection, it dawned on me that the ancient art and culture of Middle Eastern belly dancing is very directly responsible for American burlesque! Wether it’s the tussles, the flirty nuances, or the act of a woman in a skimpy outfit, skillfully shaking her thang- the similarities are unavoidable. And of course, you can’t ignore the impact of 40’s American fashion, on these ladies. I mean, one of these girls is a dead ringer for Rita Hayworth! So in honor of sexy women in other cultures, I give you the belly dance.
