#38 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Gabby's Bombshell Beauty

Being an artist, I know how hard it is getting your name out there. There’s always the dream of making your art, your primary income. So I think it’s important we stand by each other. For your viewing pleasure, this is a retro greeting card created by Gabriela Arriaza, a card maker/ addicted stamper. She creates with a tint of retro and I love it. This new piece, Bombshell Beauty, is my favorite, I think it fantastically captures the naivete of the atomic age.

Manga and Anime Pinups - More than Big Tits and Big Eyes

Manga and Anime is ripe with unaware good girls and deliberately sultry bad women. This is a short salute to my personal favorite artists and characters.

Manga (‘comics’ in Japanese) and Anime (‘animation’ in Japanese) are not just “those cute girls with big tits and big eyes” (as demonstrated to the left). Although there’s a lot of that, and the Japanese are known to let go of all sexual inhibition, when it comes to their illustrated entertainment. I believe Manga and anime are a fine art, with many styles and agendas. After all, you wouldn’t say all Western comics are about super heroes, would you? Winking

Men Pinup Artists Vs. Women Pinup Artists

Do men pinup artists draw differently than women pinup artists? It’s the battle of the sexes!

It had to be asked- you know it and I know it. It’s so basic to the art-form, it just couldn’t be ignored. Pinup art is about the way an artist perceives sex and women, so there are bound to be differences. Let’s observe, together, the differences and similarities between men and women pinup artists.

A Little History

Traditionally, not many women artists are historically documented. Women rights are such a new concept, that sometimes I wonder how we got so far, in such a short time span. Historically, it was World War II that launched women into the work-place, in America, and they had their hand in every field of expertise and occupation.

Pinups Through the Looking Glass

Some pinup artists are skilled, sophisticated and patient enough to add a little technical challenge to their work - the mirror.

While looking for pinup twins a month ago, I found myself eyeing another pinup art practice - the mirrored pinup. I haven't managed to find an essay about the appearance of mirrors and reflections in a painting (let me know if you got the inside story via comment or email Happy ), but I gather it’s an interesting research subject. In pinup art a lot of the profound meaning is shallowed out to eye-candy. I’m hoping to find some insight into the mirrored pinup.

Showing Off All Assets

As I said, in most pinup art, the profound possibilities of meaning are usually shallowed down to simple efficiency. In most cases, the pinup will be either facing the viewer, or with her back to the viewer and the mirror is there to show all the pinup’s assets - front to back.

10 Strangest Pinup Artist Quirks

Visual artists can’t hide behind their work, at some point, some one will notice, a fetish, a habit a quirk. Missing belly buttons, fake breasts, detached heads- This is a list of the 10 most fucked up pinups in classic cheesecake history.

No disrespect to these wonderful artists- as an artist myself- I know how much it sucks to be told “you missed a spot”. These details, however, are part of pinup history, and quite an idiosyncratic part, at that. I hope you enjoy this quirky look at fine pinup art.

#10 Alberto Vargas’ Pointed Nails

Alberto Vargas’ work is practically flawless. It’s skillfully executed and unfathomably beautiful. Vargas has many fetishes, but this tiny detail is so idiosyncratic and mysterious, and it repeats every single time! Pointed nails are in every Vargas image, without exception! What can this mean? Is it a catwoman thing? Is it an esthetic preference? Is Vargas flirting with danger? What do you think?

#14 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Dead Sexy Pinups is Alive and Kicking!

Today I have a budding pinup site for you. I practically fell on the floor, when I saw Dead Sexy Pinups. It may be young, but it's right! Dead Sexy Pinups is the place to check out neo pinups, From photography, to the models to cartoon pinups.

Dedicated to surfacing modern pinup art and culture, here's an excerpt from Mark Wasyl's (The blog's author and a pinup artist in his own right) manifesto:

The idea behind Dead Sexy Pinups is to create a website featuring a new generation of hottie...the Modern Pinup. While still paying homage and respect to the pinups of the last century, here you'll find more of what's happening with the Pinups of today. These girls have a bit more Attitude, are part Rock n Roll and come with the occasional "oh so sexy" touches of ink.

#13 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Charlene Chua's Modern Vector Cheesecake Illustrations

Once again, my StumbleUpon friends come through. Charlene Chua is an acclaimed vector illustrator, but more importantly, a modern day pinup artist. She does a lot of commercial work, witch you can take a look at, at her online gallery, but my personal favorites are her vector cheesecake, which have their own gallery. Chua's vector cheesecake is thematically modern, so you'll find illustrations that run between the sex object, the sports woman and the super ninja, but always in the fun loving, colorful Chua style. And if you love the extras on a dvd, check out Chua's blog, for sketches, doodles and fine pencil works.

Pinups in Space - One Small Step for Cheesecake, One Giant Leap for Erotic Fantasy

Sexy astronauts, alluring aliens, and sassy space warriors are a mainstay in pinup culture. Taking erotic fantasy out of this world.

Jules Verne's 1865 novel From the Earth to the Moon captured many people’s imagination, all around the world. But it wasn’t until a hundred years later, that the Apollo 11 would land on the moon and really fuel pop culture. It’s easy to find fantastic images of sexy aliens, today. TV and the cinema have made it popular with movies and shows such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Total Recall and many more.

I’d like to take a more chronological-as-possible look at the pinup space fantasy, because I think, all you pinup lovers will be pleasantly surprised.

Top 10 St. Patrick’s Pinups

The Holidays are coming and it’s time for a good, old fashioned count-down of the 10 best St. Patrick’s Day Pinups. Put your green shades on and have a sexy St. Patrick’s day.

The old cheesecake masters didn’t really use to draw anything special for St. Patrick’s Day. I could have listed all the pinups dressed in green, I could find, but green was a popular color, back then. So I pulled up my sleeves and went out to find specifically-made St. Patrick’s pinups. It’s not sophisticated, but it’s a delight.

I’m Not Bad- I’m Just Drawn That Way

Long before Jessica Rabbit uttered that immortal line, even cartoon pinups were struggling. Today the animated cheesecake has gone through some changes.

In the 1950’s sex wasn’t so obvious and trying to air sex was very illegal to almost impossible. In Come Max Fleischer and Tex Avery to kick some sexy into kids cartoons. I can still hear J. Edgar shutter in his grave.

Nose Art - Pinups Go to War

Nose art has, pretty much, existed since planes became a war-craft. In an effort to boost moral, pilots would paint the squadron’s insignia on the nose of the plane. A little later, shark teeth, under the propeller became all the rage. Then came the pinup.
