Over two years of The Pinup Blog and,
surprisingly enough, we’ve yet to touch on a
very pinup-esque theme: The zodiac.
Women as allegory
came up in last
week’s post. Today is all allegory
with Zodiac Pinups. Though traditionally
woman have been used in the images of the
Virgo sign and often Aquarius, this week,
we’ll be focusing on complete series of
women as zodiac signs.
#10 Fantasy Zodiac Pinups
Probably what you’d
most expect to see out of a woman zodiac
series, but surprisingly not the most
commonly found on the net. Soft and
meticulous fantasy art, with kitschy
mystical touches. It’s less overtly sexy
and focuses more on femininity.

The inspiring burlesque
artist, Tiara
the Merch Girl, is also a prolific
writer on issues of race in the world of
burlesque, at Racialicious ( “a
[fantastic] blog about the intersection of
race and pop culture” ). I was ecstatic to
find The Pinup Blog mentioned in her
article,
Who’s a Pretty Burlesque Princess
Now. The article asks
significant questions about the diversity of
burlesque and its importance as an art-form
and innovator. Take a few minutes off for
some burlesqu-shop-talk, to read this
phenomenal post.

The Pinup Blog is
back in good health. Why don’t we continue
where we left off, with today’s Bi-Weekly

back on track, with the lovely Miss Lia:

Dorothy Dale

Nothing makes a celebration like music,
and no Christmas is complete without a sexy,
stripping Santa!
They are gorgeous, they
dance, they sing, they strut and occasionally
strip. It’s The Pinup Blog’s top 10 sexy
musical pinups!
#10 The Caburlesque Kittens do Sweet
Candy
The
Caburlesque Kittens are a burlesque
group from San Diego County. Keeping it
clean, they’re almost a family show and
perfect for some light Christmas
dancing. They also get Pinup Blog props
for injecting a little diversity into
the classic Christmas pinup fantasy.
The good folks at
American
Apparel bring you a very retro
Halloween 2009. Costumes look comfy, sexy
and affordable and could probably be
easily converted to snazzy street clothes
after the after party. I especially love
this simple Cabaret costume. If you’ve got
the legs for it, go for it!

It’s my favorite day
of the year, again! Nope, not Earth
Day- it’sBlog Action
Day! A day of
concentrated activism for bloggers all
over the world, and I’m ecstatic to be
one of over 13,000 registered blogs.
Last year we concentrated our collective
efforts on
poverty, the year
before that- the first Blog Action Day- was
generally about the
environment. This year, we
deal with climate change:
From my
environmental search, two years ago, the
pinup world seemed almost oblivious to
the environment, but this year, I was
elated to discover the gorgeous and
diverseVegan
Vixens(newest on the
sidebar). Self-dubbed eco-entertainers,
the Vixens work to educate about
environmental issues such as animal
welfare, the vegan lifestyle, and climate
change. And they do it all through
burlesque and pinup styled photoshoots!
For you eco-pinup
lovers, Here’s a behind the scenes look at
their calender shoot:
Whether you’re an aspiring burlesque starlet,
or just want to shimmy & shake at your
leaser, Amazon is a great place to start a
burlesque music collection. Above, a few fine
finds.

Melanie Brown, a.k.a “Mel B”, a.k.a “Scary
Spice” of the Spice Girls, decided to join
the world of burlesque with a high energy
performance, including singing, dancing and,
of course, partial stripping. The show is
“very Vegas”, with many costume changes and a
big ensemble. It looks like a lot of fun, so
if you’re in Las Vegas any time soon, go
ahead and give it a peep.

While searching for artsy burlesque, I
stumbled across the DC
Cowboys Dance Company. This gay
cultural group is not only infectiously
fun, they stand for ideas I love to
promote on this blog: Diversity, tolerance
and unapologetic sexiness. With slogans
like Diversity Through Dance and Brokeback
Meets Broadway, and a classic beefcake
theme and attitude, I was won over
instantly.

Making art in pasties is no joking
matter, but it is a lot of laughs.
Burlesque was
always more about tease than strip. I looked
far and wide and found that many burlesque
artists take it a notch higher, with more
than raunch in mind. I also found some
fantastic pieces in “family” variety shows
that aren’t considered burlesque per se, but
would have a huge audience in the burlesque
crowd. It’s artsy, it’s fun, it’s full of
thought, it’s sexy, it’s burlesque!
Style’n’Fix
is a small yet stylin’ online shop that
caters to the breast adorning crowd. If
you feel your tits deserve the best (and
you often don’t sport a top), it’s a small
and beautiful collection of practical and
pretty pasties. Burlesque dancers may be
slightly disappointed that there’s nothing
to tussle around, but the non-professional
sexy-girl will love it!

They come in all known genres and
fetishes, the only difference is that you
can’t pin them up. Introducing pinup
sculptures.
Pinups have been named as such, for their
function rather than their content. Today,
however, I think it’s safe to say that pinup
is more than something you… well... pin up.
It’s fashion statement, it’s an aesthetic,
it’s a lifestyle. And now, it’s highly
stylized and glossy sculpture!
Above, you can view the damn fine work of
Mike James. A multi
faceted artist, James does photography and
drawings, as well. His sculptures are an
idealized blend of cute and muscular.
In a time of great divide, I think it’s a
great opportunity to create bonds rather
than gaps. As an Israeli, having a Tunisian
Muslim friend, has made me that much more
appreciative of our similarities. My friend
sent me the video to the left, because she
wanted to share with me something she
loves. Once watching this little
collection, it dawned on me that the
ancient art and culture of Middle Eastern
belly dancing is very directly responsible
for American burlesque! Wether it’s the
tussles, the flirty nuances, or the act of
a woman in a skimpy outfit, skillfully
shaking her thang- the similarities are
unavoidable. And of course, you can’t
ignore the impact of 40’s American fashion,
on these ladies. I mean, one of these girls
is a dead ringer for Rita Hayworth! So in
honor of sexy women in other cultures, I
give you the belly dance.

It’s the same classic pinup in a new,
shiny medium! All the pinups you can handle
on YouTube!
Classic pinups may be a thing of the past,
but they keep reappearing everywhere. What do
these vintage gals look like in their new
medium? Check it out!
“We are not just silly tarts with no
substance mincing about in various states of
undress; we are artists, we are performers,
we create theatre, we teach and encourage, we
write books and address academics. We provide
exquisite escapism. We rock. Spread the
word.”
They’re muscular, beautiful, have an
outrageous sense of style and can out-walk me
in high heels any day. The Pinup Blog lists
its top 10 favorite transvestites.
Transvestites are usually ignored by
mainstream society. Often they’re considered
freaks. Personally, I love effeminate men for
their beauty, honesty and courage. This list
is a homage to my favorite sweet
transvestites.
#10 Freddie Mercury and Keith Lemon -
Mustached Freedom
OK, I know what you’re thinking, and I’ll be
honest and say, this is not my fetish.
That’s why these
outrageous ladies are in spot 10. There
are two reason why Freddie Mercury- a
part- time practicing transvestite- and
Keith Lemon- who only dressed up for
this show (correct me if I’m wrong)- are
on this list:
They both went retro.
Isn’t it amazing how a small detail
like a mustache can completely challenge
perceptions of gender and beauty
conventions?
These men were both trying to be funny, but
they made me think about what we consider to
be obvious: men in mustaches are not
feminine. Really? Look again:
A little eye
candy for all you pinup lovers with a twist,
today on The Bi-Weekly Bombshell. A man with
style and nightmarish sex appeal, Marilyn
Manson has a fetish for the retro raunch.

you can spot the Dita Von Teese Cameo:

Green is not an easy color to wear, but
these bombshells make it look easy. Avoid the
pinch with sexy green dress!
The
annual St. Patrick’s pinup countdown at
The Pinup Blog is on. After a long
search, I found some fantastic green
clad bombshells, for your viewing
pleasure. Wether cartoon, 3D or
celebrity, there’s something for
everyone. So grab a beer and lets see if
you can count down from 10!
#10 CafePress’ St. Patrick’s
Pinups
Cafepress is always stocked up for
the holidays and always has a few pinup girls
in store. St. Patrick’s is no exception. A
variety of styles- all in green.
Adding another great name to The Pinup
Blog’s diverse hall of fame: The first
African American movie star, Nina Mae
McKinney.
I got a fantastically enthusiastic email from
Tia which I’d like to share with all you
pinup lovers:
“Hello,
I just wanted to Thank you for pointing out
the lack of diversity in the pin-up world.
I'm a 25 year old black woman and I've
always loved pinups despite the fact none
of them shared my race. What I do have in
common with them is the glamor, confidence,
and most importantly the curves! Also they
were sexy without being trashy and in
today’s world the two have become
synonymous. I believe the pin-ups are are
the best celebration of a woman's form and
its a shame more people don't appreciate
that. Maybe we wouldn't have so many little
girls starving themselves and hating what
they looked like if they saw more images
that were real. Not these size zero,
airbrushed fakes. It saddens me that my
generation hardly knows about these women
besides Marilyn. I respect what you’re
doing by educating people and bring
attention to the forgotten stars. I've
always preferred to watch movies from the
30's,40's and 50's because when it comes to
an image the people were more real back
then. When I try to share my enthusiasm
with peers they don't get it, and they
don't want to. Although I'm happy, that
Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, Dorothy
Dandridge, and Eartha Kitt receive some
recognition it bothers me that people like
Nina Mae McKinney, who was the 1st Black
movie star, receives no recognition at all!
She made her first movie in 1929 and Thirty
films over her career, and unlike those
other ladies her career was just as
successful in the U.S and Europe but she's
one of many who's contribution will
continue to be overlooked.
Again Thank You for doing your part,if we
all continue to honor these women they will
never be forgotten!
Tia Sanchez”
Apart from Tia’s beautifully strong words, it
struck me that I’ve never heard of said Nina
Mae McKinney. So here’s what my research
yielded...
“God approves of nudity. Adam and Eve in
the Garden of Eden, they were naked as
jaybirds.” ~ Betty (Bettie) Mea Page (April
22, 1923 – December 11,
2008)~
Many articles have sprouted about Bettie page
in the past couple of days. The details of
her death and turmoiled life are all over the
net. Most articles don’t elaborate on the
standard Wikipidia
article. I’d like to do something a
little different, to contribute to the
flood of eulogious articles and take a
look at this fascinating 1950’s sexual
icon.
Articles (such as
this) started popping up, last week,
about Bettie Page being in critical
condition. For a week I scoured the internet,
trying to understand hat was really going on.
I’m sad to report that on December
11th, queen pinup, Bettie Page has
passed. She will be missed.
Her acting agent, Mark Roesler, has created a
memorial
page in her honor. It’s a beautiful
way to pay last respects.

Last time I saw
The Rocky Horror Picture Show I was too
young to understand all the delicate nuances
of this film. But one thing was for sure: I
adore Tim Curry!
His opening song had every bit of influence
on me, as
Jessica Rabbit's. This is not just for my
GLBT readers (though I did think of you
). Curry has the voice,
body and poise to create a mesmerizingly
sexy burlesque performance. See for
yourself, the sweetest transvestite
bombshell to ever grace the silver
screen.

Burlesque has taken many forms through
the years, but one fact always stayed true:
The female form.
Last
week I talked about cartoon pinups
and added some videos for your viewing
pleasure. After a second watching, I
noticed something linking all these
unforgettable cinematic moments- A song
and a dance. These cartoon women didn't
only look good, they made for memorable
entertainment. They all reminded me of a
fabulous art form, enjoying an enticing
revival- burlesque.
Tattoos, piercing and brightly dyed hair
is what the neo-pinup girl is all about.
Christmas time is a time of giving and I want
to give some of my favorite neo-pinups a
tribute. Merry Christmas!
The pinup
revival is not about doing it like Vargas.
Today’s pinups are only a reminder of what
pinups used to look like. They have their own
special edge, with the tattoos, the piercing
and the brightly dyed hair. Maybe, in fifty
years- when the next pinup revival comes,
instead of the Betty Page hair-cut, they’ll
all have pink or red hair and body paint?
Halloween is huge for pinups (sadly the
correlation between the commercialization of
holidays and the growth of pop culture is
undeniable). So I set out to find this
Halloween's latest cheesecake
attractions.
Happy Halloween Everybody!
For this Halloween, I thought I'd celebrate
with my top 10 favorite Halloween web pinups.
From costumes, to art, to photography, the
web holds endless possibilities for the
Halloween pinup lover:
