Women and nature - the two greatest muses
of all times.

I just got an email
that
Blog Action
Day is back in action, this year. I
actually had this lovely Nature of Pinup
Girls article all ready for them,
supposing that they’re all about the
environment. Was I surprised, when I
found out, this year we blog about
poverty. So you get your Nature of
Pinups article a little early and I get
to challenge myself in linking pinups to
poverty.
For all you bloggers out
there:
Blog Action Day is a wonderful awareness
project. Each year, on October 15
th, bloggers unite
and write about one issue of importance.
Last year was a fantastic success, with the
issue being the environment. This year
promises to be even bigger. So join us!
Now, without further ado: The
Nature of Pinup Girls!
Pinup art may be somewhat a cosmopolitan art,
but even pinup artists find nature inspiring.
Enjoying the Great Out-Doors
Whether
picnicing, feeding the birds or just
frolicking among blades of grass, the 1950’s
pinups spent a lot of time out-doors. Always
perfectly made up with the perfect hair and
always with a great big smile on their faces.
Hilda - The Ultimate Nature
Girl

We’ve met Hilda on
many
different occasions and today, I’m
adding her to another list. Hilda is the
ultimate nature girl. If you follow
Duane Bryers’ Hilda paintings, you can
make out a story. She is a
self-sufficient woman, living in some
kind of cabin in the woods. Most of the
Hilda images are her interactions with
nature.
Beach Bombshell
Pinup girls in
bathing suits is inevitable and there’s
always a big chance of finding a beach
bombshell. Pearl Frush almost completely
devoted herself to this theme, and it can be
found at least once with most the 1950’s
generation of artists.
Swinging Girls
This is one of those
pinup oddities. Possibly a survivor of
another century. A beautiful young woman
swinging on a flower-decorated swing amongst
the trees. It’s a popular pinup theme and can
be found in many versions among the 1950’s
pinup artists.
Alluding to Nature
As in the swing
example, many pinup artists focus on the
model, with only a little hint to her
surroundings. Most hint to a cosy bedroom, a
home, an office, the street or even an
imaginary fantasy world. Some allude to
nature.
Post Modern Romanticism

Romanticism is a
complex artistic, literary, and
intellectual movement- a reaction
against the scientific rationalization
of nature, and was embodied most
strongly in the visual arts, music, and
literature. Most of the images of the
movement evoke a sence of awe from
nature. Funnily enough, pinup art has a
distinct link to these aesthetics and
emotions. Only instead of exhibiting an
introspective awe, through the allegory
of nature, they seem to elevate the
woman, depicted in the painting, to the
status of goddess, using awesome imagery
of nature.
This approach is specifically visible in
Frank Frazetta’s exquisite works:
Fantasy in Nature
These new artists,
that have a romanticist tendency, are the
ones who paint fantasy art. Most fantasy art
(as long as it’s outdoors) depicts a
mystically dark, fantastic idea of nature.
