Hot Rod is very much an art form. It has
to do with restoration of old vehicles, so
it’s easy to see why the artists are usually
male. And where there’s a male hub, there are
always sexy ladies.
Gil Elvgren - Vintage Feminism and the
Origin of the Hot Rod Pinup
It may have
completely happened by mistake, but we can
trace the traditional hot rod pinup way back
to the early 50’s. When Elvgren took them out
of the home and into the car. I love the few
examples, where the Elvgren pinup is
daintily, yet competently, handling the car,
or the one, where she’s the competent driver.
But the majority of classic pinups, just
depict a finely dressed lady, getting out (or
rather struggling to get out) of a car. These
glamorous depictions of a sexy, fashionable
women and their cars, were all part of the
girly art calenders that would hang in men’s
locker rooms and garages. They must have
taken on a special appeal for men, because
today, they are all the rage.
All American Neo Rockabilly
Culture
Rockabilly and hot rod are an
inseparable American phenomena. Even though
modified car racing started way back in the
late 30’s, both Rockabilly music (a 50’s
phenomenon) and hot rodding stem from the
south of the United States. As part of the
retro aesthetics of hot rodding, you can find
flashy cars and flashy neo pinups. It’s girly
galore with an edgy tattooed twist and they
have definitely evolved with the years:
Female Hot Rodder
Although today the visible women take a more
aesthetic role, you can definitely find some
very photogenic hot rodders. These sexy
professionals are all about their craft,
whether racing or modifying.
Hot Rod Pinup Art
All styles, all
genres, hot rod pinups come in cartoon style,
neo-realism, tattoo and digital. Cars and
babes seems to be a popular trend at
DeviantART. It’s a perfect place for a
sub-genre of a subculture.
Vintage Hot Rod Pinups
There aren’t
many of these, but I found a few little
treasures. There’s not much information about
them, but by the tint of the colors and the
fashions, they look like early seventies.
I also found this kinky 50’s las, on the same
page. I wonder what her story is?
Of course, if you know anything about the
above images feel free to comment in this

Modern Hot Rod by David Perry
Shiny,
with a sense of drama, David Perry knows how
to stage his models, how to shoot them and
how to post-product his images. The result is
a dramatic, gritty and yet glossy hot rod
pinup, that could tell a story, of sex and
restored cars.
Megan Fox - An Instant Hot Rod
Classic
align="left"
style="margin:20px;”>
I never actually saw the Transformers movie,
because I’m a girl. When I saw the
Transformers cartoon as a kid, I liked the
pink, female robot. A girly girl. Whether I
saw Transformers, or not, however, really is
irrelevant. Because no one could possibly
miss Megan Fox’s fantastic low cut belt
section. An instant hot rod
classic.
Black & White Anonymous Hot Rod
Pinups
I’d like to end with
a couple of lovelies, that I randomly
found on the net. On the left is Maria
Bella, with a wonderful retro piece that
looks almost vintage. On the right is a
truly anonymous woman and a fantastic
image. I can’t really guess the year-
probably mid-90’s and up, but the
styling is soft and the woman has that
sweet girl next door face with a naughty
twinkle in her eye. Now that’s a hot rod
pinup in my book.
Hope you enjoyed the ride,
