Father’s day is coming up and in that
context, it’s a great time to talk about that
ever-so-taboo fetish:
Lolita.
Nabokov wasn’t really talking about
pedophilia, but the shock value seems to
overshadow the existential value of the
novel, Lolita. The cultural significance is
found between the pages of the dictionary:
“Main Entry: Lo·li·ta
Pronunciation: \lō-ˈlē-tə\
Function: noun
Etymology: from Lolita, character in the
novel Lolita (1955) by Vladimir Nabokov
Date: 1959
: a precociously seductive girl”
And also found on celluloid (as seen above).
Most people find it disconcerting that grown
men may feel attracted to young ladies. Or
that grown women act like little girls, in
order to attract grown men. As a result,
culture has given rise to some interesting
phenomena.
Natalie Portman - The Quintessential
Lolita
I don’t know how they missed her, when they
were casting the movie, because Natalie
Portman is the
quintessential Lolita. No disrespect to
Dominique Swain’s portrayal of the oversexed
demon child, it’s just that Portman has
played every Lolita-esque role imaginable.
From Leon’s destructive Mathilda, to the girl
named Marty in Beautiful Girls, to the young
(but legal) and mysterious Alice in Closer
(how old will she be when she’s finally too
old to be too young?). Always a temptress,
always complex and always too enticing to
blame the elder man who covets her.
School Girls - The Authoritarian
Fantasy
I’ve
talked about the school girl fantasy
extensively. This one has a special
kind of authoritarian addition to its
kink. Not only is the girl too young,
she is also under the fantasizer’s
guidance and judgement. Of course, even
this fetish has been elaborated on. So
now you have your good girl and your bad
girl, your sexual tension fantasy and
your hard core corporal punishment
fantasy, and well… your alien tentacle
fantasy.
The Artist’s Young Muse
One of the common
fantasies, and way of creating a more
poetic outlook on the Lolita fetish, is
the plot-line of the elderly artist
falling for a ripe, young muse.
Typically, it’s told as a story of
coming of age. The young woman is
usually a virgin and has yet to find
love within her immature, male peers.
Teen Entertainment - Admitting to
Underage Sexuality
Teen entertainment of this first decade of
the 21st
century, brought an unrestrained teenage
sexuality/sexual obsession, to the forefront
of consciousness, and it did it with very
pinup-worthy young adults. While Dawson’s
Creek went for a curious searching kind of
appeal, this quickly evolved into
sex-obsessed teeny bopper madness with
comedies like Bring it and Superbad. The
dramas, like Pretty Persuasion and Cruel
Intentions would essentially take it a step
further and give these teenagers malicious
minds and bodies with a vengeance.
