Making art in pasties is no joking
matter, but it is a lot of laughs.
Burlesque was
always more about tease than strip. I looked
far and wide and found that many burlesque
artists take it a notch higher, with more
than raunch in mind. I also found some
fantastic pieces in “family” variety shows
that aren’t considered burlesque per se, but
would have a huge audience in the burlesque
crowd. It’s artsy, it’s fun, it’s full of
thought, it’s sexy, it’s burlesque!
Michelle L’Amour Shimmys and Shakes
America’s Family
Entertainment
Despite Brandy’s conservative hissing,
Michelle L’Amour is a skilled dancer with
great timing, class, clever humor, and the
right size. As an adult entertainer, she
understands the situation she’s in, and knows
how to shock, without getting censored.
Playful and full of wit, she did satire and
won over the people who were willing to see
beyond her tits.
Dita Von Teese -
L’Spectacle
What hasn’t been said about Dita Von Teese?
More than anything, it was correctly said
that “You
have to see her preform, physically, to
understand why Dita is Dita”.
Grandiose, dramatic, coy, Von Teese
meticulously creates an untouchable,
perfect fantasy world. A living,
breathing pinup girl, recreating a scene
right out of a Mel Ramos painting.
Amy G - Just for
Laughs
I’m not sure where this bit was featured, but
I thought it was hilarious. You could say it
belongs in a dark nightclub, but I thought
Amy G executed it splendidly. She postpones
the moment and keeps you giggling in your
sit, and doesn’t forget a grand finale.
Reminiscent of the Cabaret number at the top
of this article; Great physical comedy, great
looking lady - this is a burlesque number if
I had ever seen one.
Tiara The Merch Girl - Islamic
Routine
Toning it down to a more serious mood. Tiara
the Merch Girl debuts her burlesque career
with a brilliantly sensual piece. An
anti-striptease and a word on religion and
sexuality, Merch Girl’s piece is stunningly
profound and personal.
Crazy Horse - Woman as
Ornament
In 1951 Alain Bernardin opened his cabaret,
La Crazy Horse de Paris. The girls are
carefully chosen and meticulously costumed.
Lights are projected on to their bodies and
the become a decorative ornament- abstract
art. This tradition of light-show meets strip
has created one of the classiest, most
elaborate shows in the genre.
Jazmin Du Veaux - The Future of
Burlesque
OK, I know, it’s terrible to say it, but this
9 year old has an incredible awareness of her
body and yes- she has sex appeal. A skilled
dancer with a real flare and sense of humor,
I can’t wait till Jazmin Du Veaux grows up.
And with a name like that, her place in the
burlesque hall of fame is guaranteed.
Anna Fur Laxis - Bettie Page
Tribute
This routine starts out very modestly. It
seems like it’s nothing special, other than
Miss Fur Laxis’ great impersonation of Bettie
Page. I won’t ruin it for you, I’ll just say
that it’s a wonderful tribute to a classic,
with all that is great in burlesque.
Hope you enjoyed the show,
